Categories & Eligibility - 2012

These are the race categories and eligibility rules that will be applied at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships on February 5, 2012 in Toronto.  You may row in any category for which you are eligible.    Proof of eligibility may be required on day of race.

Note:  The category in which you race on February 5, 2012 in Toronto has no bearing on qualifying for the World Championships in Boston. Only, two factors: age on February 19, 2012 and erg score obtained on February 5, 2012 will determine eligibility for winning one of the four trips to Boston to compete at World's.

Lightweight

Women  -  135 lbs  or less   (61kg)

Men   -  165 lbs or less (75kg)

Senior
Men and Women - Open to all ages.  (This category was formerly known as "Open")
Senior B
Under age 23. Must be 22 or less up to and including December 31, 2012. Must be born in 1990 or later (1991, 1992, etc). If you turn 23 in 2012 you must row Senior. 

Junior A

(18 & under)

Must be 18 or under until December 31, 2012 and enrolled in a high school or lower  grade.  Must be born in 1994 or later (1995, 1996, etc)  If you turn 19 in 2012 you must row Senior B.

Junior B

(16 & under) 

Must be 16 or under until December 31, 2012 and  enrolled in high school or lower  grade.  Must be born in 1996 or later (1997, 1998, etc). If you turn 17 in 2012 you must row Junior A.
Youth 

Age 13 and under on race day (February 5, 2012) and enrolled in elementary school. Race in the category that matches age on February 6, 2012

Age groupings are: Age 7 and under; 8-9; 10-11; 12-13.

Gold, Silver and Bronze will be awarded to winners in each age grouping.

University 
Must be registered in a full-time program at a recognized Canadian or U.S. University or College.
Masters

Must be 30 years or older on February 5, 2012.   Use age on Feb 5, 2012

Masters - Age 30-39   - Lightweight or open

Senior Masters - Age 40 - 49 - Lightweight  or open

Veteran Masters  Age 50 or older - Lightweight or open  (see info below...)

Veteran Masters
Veterans will race within five-year age categories, and results will be based on raw (un-handicapped) scores. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in both the open and lightweight divisions for all five year age group starting with Age 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, etc.
Coxswain
Primarily a coxswain. Racing and training experience limited to role of a coxswain. Must have coxed a rowing race in a sanctioned regatta at least once during the previous regatta season in 2011.  There are no age or weight restrictions for coxswains. Proof of coxswain status from a Coach or official club representative must be provided upon request from the CIRC Head Regatta Official.  (Note: Distance of Coxswain race is 1000m)
Adaptive

Refer to the Adaptive Rowing Classifications used by Concept 2's On-line Ranking System and select the statement that best applies to your disability as it applies to the sport of rowing.

University Crews (Eights)

University Crew Eights are divided into men's and women's divisions.  All 8 crew members must be the same gender. Composite crews (i.e. from different clubs or Universities) are allowed.

Crew

(Fours)

Crews Fours are divided into men's and women's divisions. Fours can be made up of four "recreational" or novice rowers or four "competitive" club athletes but all four rowers must be the same gender.

Parent / Offspring

(Double)

Can be any combination of father/son, mother/son, father/daughter, mother/daughter, or grandparent. Must be legal guardian or biologically related as per combinations listed here. Proof of familial relationship must be provided upon request.
